Didn’t Siemens employees need a home too? Here at Siedlung Heimat, we uncover a slice of Berlin’s past. Siedlung Heimat stands as a testament to early 20th-century social housing. This settlement reflects a time of rapid industrial growth. Siemens was expanding its operations. The company recognized the need to provide housing for its workforce.

Siedlung Heimat emerged between 1929 and 1930. Hans C. Hertlein, a prominent architect, designed it. Hertlein designed 900 apartments for Siemens workers. Siedlung Heimat offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people.

Siemensstadt, where Siedlung Heimat is located, has a rich history. In the late 19th century, Siemens’ production sites were scattered around Berlin. The area north of the Spree River became the new location. It was near Nonnendamm. Siemens acquired a large area of land in 1897. This area was largely undeveloped.

In 1899, Siemens considered building a residential colony for its employees. Initial resistance from Charlottenburg and Spandau delayed the project. Spandau eventually granted approval in 1904. The Märkische Bodengesellschaft developed the area. Construction of the first residential blocks began in the autumn of 1904.

The area from Haselhorst to the Charlottenburg border was known as Kolonie Nonnendamm. In 1914, Nonnendamm was renamed Siemensstadt. At that time, the settlement had 7,000 residents. It provided jobs for 23,000 workers.

Siemensstadt continued to grow. By 1920, it became part of Greater Berlin. In 2008, the Siedlung Heimat became a UNESCO World Heritage site. It represents a new type of social housing.

Take a moment to appreciate the architecture. Notice the traditional design. Hertlein also designed other buildings for Siemens. These include the Siemens-Siedlung am Rohrdamm and the Siedlung Rohrdamm-West. Siedlung Heimat stands in contrast to the Ringsiedlung. The Ringsiedlung showcases the Neues Bauen architectural style.

As you explore Siedlung Heimat, consider the lives of its residents. Imagine the families who lived here. They worked in the nearby Siemens factories. They contributed to Berlin’s industrial might.

Siedlung Heimat remains a vibrant residential area. It blends historical charm with modern living. It reminds us of Berlin’s industrial past. It shows the importance of social housing.
