Did you know that Olivet Missionary Baptist Church has seen more than its fair share of rebuilding? Right here before us stands a testament to faith resilience and the unwavering spirit of its congregation. This isn’t just a church it’s a living history book. Its story begins long before this building stood.
Olivet Missionary Baptist Church has a rich past filled with trials and triumphs. The original building wasn’t this one. A new edifice was constructed in 1938 under Pastor Branch’s leadership. His innovative fundraising methods led to incredible growth. Membership soared from 100 to 1800. Sadly Pastor Branch died young in 1943.
Several pastors followed each leaving their mark. Reverend D C Mitchell briefly led the church. Then came Reverend Nathaniel T Burks Sr a true builder of the church. He oversaw the move to 3115 Lyons Avenue. He also planned and built the current structure. Under his guidance Olivet hosted numerous important events. The church even served as a venue for national and state level Baptist gatherings.
Tragedy struck in 1983 when a fire ravaged the church. Reverend Burks once again stepped up as builder. The church was rebuilt and ready for worship within months a testament to the community’s spirit. Reverend Burks served for an astounding 43 and a half years.
After his passing Reverend Kenneth B Spears became pastor. He introduced a new theme and developed a Mission Statement. New ministries blossomed. Renovations transformed the church. A new baptism pool computers and even a van were acquired.
Reverend Raynard Hillis served as interim pastor before Reverend Booker Wesley Austin Jr took the helm. He gave the church a new motto and oversaw further improvements. The Mt Olivet Community Development Corporation was established. He also acquired several parcels of land.
Reverend Robert L Thomas Jr became interim and then the seventh pastor. Under his leadership the church paid off debts. It also undertook many renovations including the fellowship hall kitchen. New lighting a sign and additional parking were added.
Olivet Missionary Baptist Church has faced numerous challenges. It has consistently risen from the ashes. Its story is one of faith perseverance and community. This building is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of enduring faith and the power of God’s grace. It’s a legacy built on prayer resilience and the unwavering dedication of its members.
