Here at Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Christian Church in Littleton, a suburb of Denver, that very connection comes alive. This isn’t an Alaskan outpost, but a vibrant community nestled in the Colorado landscape. Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Christian Church holds the distinction of being the first church named after St. Herman of Alaska, the first canonized Orthodox Saint in North America. The church’s story began not here, but in Denver, in 1972. Ten members of the Transfiguration of Christ Orthodox Cathedral felt the pull to establish a new mission. Their vision took root under the guidance of Father Andrew Harrison. Their first services were held not in a grand church, but in the American Legion Hall in Lakewood. The mission quickly found a home on East Bellview in Cherry Hills Village in 1973. Growth propelled them to acquire this property, formerly the Belleview Bible Chapel, on West Prentice Avenue in Littleton. The first Divine Liturgy echoed through this very building in September 1976. The church was officially consecrated in 1977 by Archbishop John of San Francisco. A key part of Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Christian Church’s identity is its commitment to English.
