Why is this street called Obercromford? It seems a little out of place, doesn’t it? We’re in Ratingen, Germany, not Cromford, England. Well, there’s a fascinating story here at Obercromford, a story of ambition, espionage, and the birth of German industry. You see, Obercromford was once home to a pioneering cotton mill, the Textilfabrik Cromford. In 1783, a German entrepreneur named Johann Gottfried Brügelmann built this mill, directly inspired by Richard Arkwright’s groundbreaking water-powered cotton spinning mill in Cromford, England. Brügelmann, desperate to replicate Arkwright’s success, went to great lengths, even resorting to industrial espionage to obtain the secrets of the water frame technology. This caused quite a stir at the time, as you can imagine. The Textilfabrik Cromford was a marvel, the first of its kind on the European mainland. It marked the beginning of industrialization in the Rhineland, transforming the region’s economy and social fabric. At its peak, the mill employed hundreds of workers and was a testament to Brügelmann’s vision and ambition. Though the roar of machinery has long fallen silent, Obercromford stands as a reminder of that pivotal moment in history. The original mansion, the “Herrenhaus,” still stands, a silent witness to the Brügelmann family’s legacy. Today, it serves as a venue for weddings and special events, a touch of elegance amidst the echoes of a bygone era.
