Whispers of the past linger here at Korle Lagoon. This isn’t just water. It’s a living history book reflecting Accra’s soul. Korle Lagoon has witnessed centuries unfold. It started as a small settlement by Ewe hunters. They were drawn in by a mystical spirit. Legend says this spirit enchanted two women Senam and Carol. The women convinced others to settle here. This became Jamestown. The area thrived as a fishing hub until the 1950s. Then in 1961 the Ghanaian government took over. They dredged the lagoon. They also raised nearby land to prevent floods. Industries sprung up around Korle Lagoon. First it was brewing and food processing. Later car repairs and even electronic scrap processing at Agbogbloshie.

The Odaw River fed into Korle Lagoon. This river runs through Accra. Its catchment covers 60% of the city. It sadly became a polluted channel. Waste was dumped directly into the lagoon. The combination of industrial waste and river pollution made Korle Lagoon one of the most polluted water bodies on Earth by 2002. Heavy rains worsened the problem leading to frequent flooding. The 1990s saw the Korle Lagoon Ecological Restoration Project. This aimed to clean up the mess. It focused on restoring a natural balance and improving water flow.

Old Fadama an unplanned settlement developed along the lagoon’s shores. Its population swelled to around 30000. The government wanted to remove it. They viewed it as a pollution source. Protests from residents stopped this plan. In 2007 the Odaw River was diverted. Its outflow was desilted. Now it flows directly into the Gulf of Guinea bypassing the lagoon. The Or Foundation believes Korle Lagoon can be cleaned. They are optimistic about making it a recreational area in five years. They point to the Thames River in London as an example of successful cleanup.

The Korle Lagoon’s journey reflects Accra’s growth. It shows the tension between progress and environmental protection. The cleanup is a daunting task. It will need government support and the cooperation of Accra’s residents. The story of Korle Lagoon is a reminder of the delicate balance between urban development and environmental responsibility. It’s a story of resilience a testament to the enduring spirit of this place. It is a story that continues to unfold.
