In 1903, the cornerstone was laid for a grand residence at the Charleston Navy Yard. This house, known as Quarters G, became a significant part of the Charleston Navy Yard Officers’ Quarters Historic District. Quarters G stands as a testament to a bygone era. It reflects the architectural styles prevalent during the base’s early 20th-century expansion. The district isn’t just a collection of houses. It represents the growth and development of senior military housing within the Charleston Navy Yard. From its inception as a navy yard, later transitioning to a naval shipyard and finally Naval Base Charleston, the district evolved. Quarters G, along with other quarters and structures, contributes to the historical narrative of this district. These buildings showcase a blend of architectural styles, including late Victorian, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Italian Renaissance Revival, and Colonial Revival. The district also features the unique Panama House style, a product of the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal era and World War II. Quarters G is more than just bricks and mortar.
