In 1836, Valongo became a municipality. The Museu Municipal de Valongo then became home to the town hall. The building itself dates back to the early 19th century. It was commissioned by Bernardo Martins da Nova. A chapel dedicated to S. Bruno was added in 1825. The town hall resided in the Museu Municipal de Valongo building until 1989. Its historical and architectural significance then inspired its transformation into a museum. The Museu Municipal de Valongo officially opened on June 1, 2001. The renovation sought to preserve historical elements while integrating modern exhibition spaces. The Museu Municipal de Valongo’s collection is quite diverse. It features exhibits on bread-making, slate mining, linen processing, religious art, paintings, and traditional Bugios and Mourisqueiros costumes. There are also exhibits dedicated to the region’s history. These include trilobite fossils, prehistoric artifacts, and Roman remnants from the gold mines in the surrounding mountains. The ground floor typically houses a permanent exhibit summarizing local history. Temporary exhibitions are also hosted on other floors, sometimes occupying both levels depending on the exhibit’s size. The Museu Municipal de Valongo offers guided tours and themed workshops, available by appointment.
