Can a boulevard whisper secrets? Boulevard Léopold II in Brussels certainly does. It stretches out before us, a long, wide avenue, seemingly whispering tales of ambition and controversy. Boulevard Léopold II isn’t just a road; it’s a story etched in stone and asphalt. Named after King Leopold II, this boulevard reflects the complexities of his reign. He was known as the “King-Builder,” responsible for grand projects like the Africa Museum and even this very boulevard. These projects, however, were financed through his brutal exploitation of the Congo Free State, his personal colony. This grand Boulevard Léopold II, therefore, stands as a monument to both progress and oppression. Imagine the year 1958. The World’s Fair is in full swing, and a temporary viaduct soars above Boulevard Léopold II, a futuristic addition to the cityscape. This viaduct, intended as a temporary structure, clung to life for decades, finally meeting its demise in 1984. Contrary to rumors, it wasn’t gifted to Thailand. Another temporary viaduct, however, did find a new home there, becoming the Thaï-Belgium Flyover Bridge. This boulevard has also graced the silver screen, appearing in films like Jerzy Skolimowski’s “Le Départ” and Jacques Brel’s “Le Far West”. Today, after extensive renovations, the traffic flows beneath us, hidden in the Annie Cordy Tunnel, which runs below Boulevard Léopold II. Above ground, the boulevard has been reborn. A stroll along Boulevard Léopold II offers more than just a walk. It’s a journey through history, a testament to the enduring power of memory and a stark reminder of the shadows cast by ambition. Perhaps as you walk along Boulevard Léopold II, you too can hear its whispers.
