‘Apostle of the Tree’ they called him. Right here we stand before the Busto a Ricardo Codorníu. Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico was far more than just a name. He was a force of nature in his own right.
Born in Cartagena in 1846 Ricardo Codorníu became an engineer. He dedicated his life to the reforestation of Spain. He passed away in Murcia in 1923 at the age of 77.
This bust commemorates Ricardo Codorníu’s work. It was erected in 1926 through popular subscription. Friends of the tree raised the funds to honor him. Prominent figures attended the inauguration. Among them were the Infante Don Fernando and Madrid’s mayor Juan de la Cierva.
Codorníu wasn’t just an engineer. He was an early environmentalist. His most famous achievement was the reforestation of Sierra Espuña in Murcia. He started this work in 1889. Also he helped restore the pine forest of Guardamar del Segura. This prevented dunes from overwhelming the town.
Beyond practical work Ricardo Codorníu was a passionate communicator. He tirelessly promoted the importance of forests. Through conferences and publications he spread his message. He emphasized the value of trees mountains and birds. To him they formed a harmonious whole vital to human life.
Interestingly Ricardo Codorníu also embraced Esperanto. He founded the Murcian Society of Esperanto in 1902. He became the first president of the Spanish Society for the Propaganda of Esperanto.
He founded the Spanish Society of Friends of the Tree in Barcelona in 1911. This mirrored a US association. This group popularized the annual Tree Festival.
His dedication earned him significant honors. He received the Grand Cross of Isabel la Católica. Also he received the Cross of Agricultural Merit. The Encomienda of Alfonso XII was bestowed upon him too.
Sadly this bust has suffered some damage. The nose is notably absent. Yet its presence here reminds us of Codorníu’s lasting legacy. His bust stands as a tribute to a man who understood the importance of trees. He understood their role in our world. He dedicated his life to protecting them.
