Was it a palace fit for an emperor? No, but the Römischer Kaiser, or “Roman Emperor,” certainly aimed for grandeur. Here we stand before this once-magnificent hotel, now a blend of office and retail space. Its story unfolds at the turn of the 20th century, in 1904, when Düsseldorf’s city center welcomed a new landmark. The Römischer Kaiser, designed by architect Josef Kleesattel, rose proudly on the corner of what is now Stresemannstraße. Its original address was actually Steinstraße 70. Imagine horse-drawn carriages clattering past, their passengers gazing up at the ornate, four-story edifice. The Römischer Kaiser boasted all the modern amenities of the time: electric lights, an elevator, a rarity back then, and central heating. The hotel’s exterior showcased intricate Neo-Gothic details: tracery on balconies, windows, pointed arches, and even little turrets that gave it a fairytale-like charm. But the interior held its own special allure. Hermann vom Endt designed the inviting beer and wine tavern, a popular gathering place for locals. In fact, a pivotal moment in Düsseldorf’s maritime history occurred within these walls: the founding of the Düsseldorf Yacht Club in 1908. The Römischer Kaiser’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The building suffered damage during World War II, losing some of its original charm in the post-war reconstruction. However, in the 1980s, a restoration effort brought back the gables and turrets, recalling the building’s former glory. While no longer a hotel, the Römischer Kaiser remains a significant landmark, its walls echoing with tales of a bygone era. It stands as a testament to Düsseldorf’s evolving cityscape, a silent observer of the city’s transformation through time.
