In 1837, a spark ignited in the heart of Athens. The newly established University of Athens introduced chemistry as a distinct subject, marking the beginning of the Faculty of Chemistry’s long and distinguished journey. Our story begins in the basement of the university’s central building. Xavier Landerer, a Bavarian pharmacist and the first Associate Professor of Chemistry, held captivating experiments. These demonstrations weren’t just for students; they drew in curious Athenians, eager to witness the wonders of this emerging science. The true foundation of chemistry as a separate discipline in Greece is attributed to Anastasios Christomanos. Appointed Associate Professor in 1863, Christomanos spearheaded the construction of the first dedicated chemistry laboratory building on Solonos Street. This building, known today as “Palaio Chimeio” or “Old Chemistry Building,” not only housed chemistry labs, but also those of physics, pharmacy, and botany. Christomanos, during his time as Rector of the University of Athens in 1896, championed the establishment of the School of Sciences. This move solidified the importance of scientific disciplines, transferring physics and mathematics from the School of Philosophy to the newly formed School of Sciences. The Faculty of Chemistry, officially established in 1918, began accepting students eager to delve into the world of chemical reactions and discoveries. Initially, the department consisted of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry chairs. Soon after, Physical Chemistry was reintroduced, with Dimitrios Tsakalotos as its first professor. By 1922, the department expanded further, encompassing History of Science and Food Chemistry. Later additions included Industrial Chemistry in 1949 and Analytical Chemistry in 1966. The Faculty of Chemistry eventually outgrew its historic home on Solonos Street. In 1990, it relocated to the University Campus, situated in the eastern part of Athens between Zografou and Kesariani municipalities. Here, in modern facilities, the Faculty of Chemistry continues its tradition of excellence, educating future generations of chemists and contributing to scientific advancements.
