In January 1849 part of the viaduct near Oxford Road collapsed during scaffolding removal. Three men died two were injured. The cause Slow-setting mortar in wet weather.

The viaduct’s 224 arches average 30 feet in span and height. They’re 28 feet wide. The tallest arches are between Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations where the ground is lower.
