Over 230 artworks reside within these walls. This is the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, Milan’s remarkable art gallery. Nestled inside the historic Sforza Castle, it’s a treasure trove of Italian art history.

The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco officially opened in 1878. Its story began much earlier. Upstanding Milanese citizens wanted Milan to have its own art collection. The wills of Fogliani-Marchesi family in 1861 and others formed the foundation. Donations and legacies followed throughout the 1800s.

Initially, the collection was housed in the Public Gardens. It was then moved to the prestigious Sforza Castle. On May 10, 1900, the Museo Archeologico e Artistico opened its doors.

Inside the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, you will see masterpieces by Titian and Andrea Mantegna. Canaletto, Antonello da Messina, and Pisanello are also represented. The collection boasts works by Vincenzo Foppa and Giovanni Bellini. Masterpieces by Correggio, Bernardino Luini, Lorenzo Lotto, and Tintoretto are also found here. Over time, donations from citizens and collectors expanded the collection to over 1,500 artworks.

The Pinacoteca’s early rooms showcase religious paintings. They date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Works by Vincenzo Foppa and Bergognone adorn these walls. You can also admire art by Bramantino and Carlo Crivelli. Don’t miss the Trivulzio Madonna by Andrea Mantegna from 1497.

Later rooms display art from the 16th to 18th centuries. Secular and religious works are both present. Canaletto and Giambattista Tiepolo shine here. You will also find art by Bernardo Bellotto and Titian. Do not forget to see the paintings of Tintoretto.

Look for portraits of the Sforza family. They offer a glimpse into the castle’s past. The Town Hall invested to conserve Milan’s heritage. They aimed to fill gaps through acquisitions.

Amedeo Lia donated a devotional painting in 2007. It depicts the Sforza Castle as painted by a student of Leonardo da Vinci. The Pinacoteca focuses on 15th-century Lombard paintings. It also includes pieces from Veneto and Flemish-Dutch schools. Embossed wooden pieces, marble statues, and terracotta busts are also featured. Medals enrich the proposed artistic journey through time.

The collection is located on the Ducal Courtyard’s first floor. It spans halls XX to XXVI. The halls are wide and well-lit. Benches are available for you to relax and enjoy the outdoor views.

The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco is more than a museum. It embodies Milan’s artistic spirit. As you leave, remember the generosity that created this collection. Consider the artists who shaped its legacy. Their visions continue to inspire visitors today.
