It’s part of a global movement sparked by a young Welsh girl named Mary Jones. In 1800, 15-year-old Mary Jones walked 25 miles to purchase a Welsh Bible she had saved up for six years to buy. Her determination ignited a fire in Reverend Thomas Charles and other church leaders. They embarked on a mission to make the Bible available to everyone in Wales, which eventually expanded worldwide. The Bible Society of Malaysia is part of the United Bible Societies. This international fellowship comprises 147 national chapters serving over 200 countries and territories. They translate, publish, and distribute Bibles in countless languages. This organization has faced adversity, particularly regarding the use of the word “Allah” in Malay-language Bibles. In January 2014, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department raided The Bible Society of Malaysia’s office. They confiscated hundreds of Bibles and arrested two officials. The incident highlighted the complex religious and legal landscape in Malaysia. This led to The Bible Society of Malaysia relocating its operations to Kuala Lumpur for greater religious freedom. They continue to provide Bibles to Malaysians. They are a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of access to sacred texts.
