Gazing up at the Ι. Ν. Αγίου Ευθυμίου, also known as the Little Metropolis, did you notice the unusual building material? It’s almost entirely constructed from recycled marble. These marble pieces, called “spolia,” are remnants of ancient structures, whispering tales of Athens’ rich past. The Little Metropolis, nestled beside the grand Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, is formally known as the Church of St. Eleftherios or Panagia Gorgoepikoos (meaning “Panagia Who Grants Requests Quickly”). It stands as a testament to resourcefulness and historical layering. Imagine the ancient Athenians worshipping Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth, at a temple on this very spot. Centuries later, the Little Metropolis rose, incorporating fragments of that forgotten shrine. Its unique architecture distinguishes it from other Byzantine churches of the era. While it follows the cross-in-square design, the extensive use of spolia makes it a true architectural anomaly. The marble blocks, ranging from Classical to Byzantine periods, even feature intricate sculptures and inscriptions. One can spend hours deciphering these remnants, piecing together a fragmented history. Inside the Ι. Ν. Αγίου Ευθυμίου, the octagonal dome, once supported by four columns, now rests on piers. A faint trace of its former glory remains: a fresco of the Panagia above the entrance apse. Sadly, the rest of the interior artwork has been lost to time. The church’s history continues into modern times. In 2023, it served as the location for the lying-in-state of Constantine II, the last King of the Hellenes, a poignant moment that added another layer of history to this already storied building. So, the next time you admire the Ι. Ν. Αγίου Ευθυμίου, remember it’s not just a church. It’s a living museum, a testament to the enduring spirit of Athens.
