In 1913, a seed of an idea was planted on the Upper East Side. This seed, nurtured by Hazel Hyde, blossomed into The Town School. Miss Hyde’s School, as it was first known, began as a humble nursery school on East 81st Street. The Town School now stands before you, a testament to Hyde’s vision and the dedication of countless educators and families. The school’s motto, “Gaudeant Discentes” – “Let there be joy in learning” – encapsulates the spirit of this unique institution. The Town School is an independent, coeducational elementary school, serving approximately 400 students from nursery school through eighth grade. Its location on a cul-de-sac at the end of East 76th Street offers stunning views of the East River and nearby John Jay Park. The Town School isn’t confined to a single building. It occupies three interconnected structures, a physical representation of its growth and evolution over the years. Within these walls, you’ll find a state-of-the-art library, a technology center, well-equipped science labs, a full-size gymnasium, and two expansive play terraces. A large auditorium hosts school gatherings and performances. Even more impressive, The Town School boasts solar panels, a wind turbine, and an Innovation Lab, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking education. The Town School maintains a low student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 6:1. Class sizes range from 18-22 students, with two teachers in the early grades. This ensures personalized attention and fosters a close-knit learning community. The Town School’s history is a story of expansion and adaptation. After its initial years on East 81st Street, it moved to 114 East 76th Street in the 1920s. In 1936, Hazel Hyde resigned, and the school was renamed The Town School under the leadership of Harriette Young, Margaret Crane, and Lois Wright. Following World War II, the school purchased its current location and acquired adjoining brownstones in the 1950s. In 1963, The Town School settled into the former East Side Settlement House. Construction of a new building soon followed. The school continued to expand its physical footprint throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Today, The Town School remains a vibrant hub of learning and growth. Its commitment to innovation is reflected in the wind turbine, solar panels, and state-of-the-art facilities. As you stand here, consider the generations of students who have passed through these doors, carrying with them the values and knowledge instilled at The Town School.
