Serene beauty. That’s the first impression of the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a testament to faith art and the post-war spirit of rebirth. Built between 1956 and 1958 the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse stands as a symbol of hope. It rose from the ashes of a challenging era.

The Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse was the brainchild of Philippe Leclercq a textile industrialist. He envisioned a place of worship near his home in the Hempenpont working-class district. His vision extended beyond mere bricks and mortar. He wanted a masterpiece of modern religious art.

Leclercq commissioned the renowned Swiss architect Hermann Baur. Baur’s design drew inspiration from Le Corbusier’s school of architecture. He created a structure that seamlessly blended into the surrounding former Flemish farm courtyard. It’s almost like a modern-day begijnhof a quiet haven. The building is strikingly asymmetrical. Yet it harmonizes beautifully with the neighboring workers’ houses. The chapel’s unique campanile bell tower is visible from afar its openwork concrete structure a striking feature.

But the artistry doesn’t stop with the architecture. Inside and out the Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse is adorned with breathtaking works of art. Alfred Manessier a prominent painter and stained-glass artist created stunning glass panels. These vibrant stained-glass walls tell the story of Saint Thérèse. The colors a symphony of life and faith. Red for suffering violet for spirituality yellow and white for light and blue for life itself.

Eugène Dodeigne a sculptor contributed several pieces. His statue of Saint Thérèse graces the chapel’s choir a powerful and moving presence. The mosaic adorning the canopy beckons you into the sacred space. A tapestry depicting the Holy Face based on Georges Rouault’s work is a captivating focal point. It’s woven in subdued shades of gray yet exudes intense spiritual presence. It’s an impressive work by master weaver Jacques Plasse-Le-Caisne.

The Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse wasn’t just commissioned by the Leclerq couple. The local parishioners and the diocesan commission for sacred art were also involved. They even chose the dedication to Saint Thérèse. Leclercq initially suggested Saint Francis the patron saint of artists. A committee of parishioners ultimately decided on Saint Thérèse. After its completion the Leclerqs donated the chapel to the Diocese of Lille a generous act of faith and patronage.

The Chapelle Sainte-Thérèse is more than a building. It’s a living testament to artistic collaboration. It’s a reflection of faith and a beacon of hope. A place that transcends time and invites contemplation. Its dedication to Saint Thérèse is a subtle but significant detail. It connects the chapel’s modern aesthetic to a powerful spiritual legacy. It’s truly a unique place a treasure hidden in plain sight. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry the history and the serenity of this extraordinary chapel.
