Established in 2004 the Vidyaranya Institute of Knowledge and Advanced Studies VIKAS formerly known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Studies JNIAS stands proudly before you. This unique institute part of Jawaharlal Nehru University is a pioneering research center. For over two decades it has expanded its reach. VIKAS aims to become a nucleus of Indo-centric studies. It promotes non-western Sanatani Dharmic and alternative narratives.
Initially JNIAS focused on decolonizing the study of India. It challenged the traditional Indology developed by the British Raj. JNIAS fostered dialogue with global scholars. However in recent years the institute recognized a need for a broader approach. The rapidly changing global landscape demanded a new focus. The Russia-Ukraine war and the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted these needs.
Extensive consultations led to VIKAS’s creation in May 2023. The institute now explores non-western cosmologies ontologies and epistemologies. It also delves into Westology understanding Western societies from non-western perspectives. VIKAS studies various fields including history culture philosophy and arts. It covers cinema media performance studies and inter-civilizational dialogue. State society culture languages science technology innovation defense security diplomacy foreign policy and sustainable development are all under the institute’s purview. Women-led development is also a key area of focus.
More than 100 high-level scholars from outside India have received fellowships at VIKAS. Fellowships range from one to twelve months. VIKAS plays a distinct and unique role within the university.
