Bang Khen’s story begins as an amphoe in 1897. It was once a part of Phra Nakhon province. This district sprawled across a wide plain. Locals called it Thung Bang Khen or Bang Khen Field. Farms dominated this landscape.
The name Bang Khen may originate from a folk tale. The tale is called Legend of Lord Uthong. A gold tanker belonging to Lord Uthong ran aground in a canal. People had to ken or push the tanker through.
In 1933, Bang Khen became a battleground. The Boworadet rebellion saw fighting between Prince Boworadet’s army and government troops. This event marked a significant moment in Thai history.
1972 marked a turning point. Thonburi and Phra Nakhon provinces merged to form Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. Amphoe and tambon became khet and khwaeng. Bang Khen officially became a district.
Bang Khen was once much larger than it is today. Over time, portions were split off. Don Mueang, Chatuchak and Sai Mai districts were created. However, Bang Khen gained Mu 8-10 of Chorakhe Bua subdistrict from Lat Phrao.
Today, Bang Khen is divided into two sub-districts. These are Anusawari and Tha Raeng. Anusawari is known for its proximity to the Thai Army barracks.
The Constitution Defense Monument once stood proudly in Anusawari. It commemorated the failure of Prince Boworadet’s revolt. Sadly, it disappeared mysteriously in 2018.
Wat Phra Si Mahathat Wora Maha Wiharn is a significant temple in Bang Khen. It houses holy relics. It is a place of reverence for many. The amulet Phra Kring Thung Bang Khen originated here. It was made in 1969. People highly revere it.
Ying Charoen Market is a bustling hub of local life. It is also known as Saphan Mai Market. Locals love this market. You can find everything from fresh produce to local delicacies here.
Lumphini Boxing Stadium moved to Bang Khen in 2014. It was formerly in Pathum Wan. This is a great place to watch Muay Thai.
Ban Bang Khen offers a glimpse into Thailand’s past. It is a replica of an antique Thai village. It’s a charming place to experience old Thai life.
Bang Khen boasts educational institutions like Phranakhon Rajabhat University. Rattanakosin Somphot Bangkhen School is also located here. Krirk University is another option.
