“A space for opportunities and collaboration” is what the alumni association of ETS de Ingenieros Industriales says. But what does that mean for us standing here today?
ETS de Ingenieros Industriales stands as a testament to Spain’s commitment to engineering and technological advancement. It is a place where ideas take shape. Dreams gain traction. Futures are forged.
Founded in 1907, the Escuela Tècnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales has a rich history. Originally, it was located on Fuencarral Street. It later expanded to the “Colegio de Sordomudos” due to increased student numbers. By 1907, electricity was added to the specializations. The degree’s duration increased from five to six years. The growing number of students prompted a move to the Palacio de Exposiciones. It remains there today after significant expansions and reforms.
In 1971, it integrated with other engineering schools in Madrid to form the Universidad Politècnica de Madrid. The ETSII continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing needs of the industry.
Notably, the ETSII was granted ABET accreditation in August 2010. This is a prestigious quality certification for engineering programs. Only a few schools have it. Harvard, MIT, and Stanford are some of them. The ETSII, ETSI de Telecomunicacion, and ETSI de Minas y Energia were the first public centers in Spain to receive this recognition.
Inside the ETS de Ingenieros Industriales, near the main entrance, rests a piece of industrial history. It is the first industrial steam engine imported to Spain. D. Napier & Son of London built it in 1839. It powered the FNMT’s presses. It was later donated to the ETSII. It became a historical monument for industry and commerce. The steam engine’s installation finished in May 1914.
The machine features six Doric-style columns and a four-section flywheel. It weighs four tons. A virtual model was created in 2017. It allowed for the simulation of the machine’s movement.
ETSII offers degrees in Industrial Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Since 2010-2011, it has offered degrees in Industrial Technology Engineering. It also provides degrees in Chemical Engineering and Energy Engineering. Thirteen specialized master’s degrees and postgraduate programs for managers are available. The school began offering an Engineering Management degree in 2015-2016.
The Escuela Tècnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales maintains a strong educational approach. It resembles the French Grandes Écoles system. This is proven by double degree agreements with French schools. These include École nationale des ponts et chaussées and École centrale Paris.
The ETSII has agreements with 109 universities across 23 countries. It is part of the TIME network. This allows for double degrees and joint research.
In 2010, the ETSII had 4,000 students, 300 professors, and 650 research project investigators. The ranking published by El Mundo newspaper considered the school the best in Spain for industrial technology engineering between 2010 and 2017.
Many accomplished professionals have emerged from the ETSII. Elena Salgado and Rodolfo Martín Villa are two ministers and vice presidents of the government. Antonio Colino was a pioneer in nuclear energy in Spain.
