A whisper of incense hangs in the air. The Cerkiew pw swietych Rownych Apostolov Konstantyna i Heleny stands before you a small wooden sanctuary.

This unassuming church in Zgorzelec holds a remarkable history. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of a community that has faced displacement and persecution. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this border town. A story spanning centuries.

The roots of Orthodox Christianity here run surprisingly deep. Long before this small wooden structure existed. The area was part of Great Moravia. Saints Cyril and Methodius’s mission touched these lands. Evidence suggests that the Slavic rite flourished here. Pagan cremation burials disappeared. They were replaced by Christian practices. This transition occurred before the arrival of the Latin-German mission in the mid-11th century.

The area’s strategic location resulted in frequent changes of power. In 1015 Businc a significant settlement on Landeskrone Hill was destroyed. Biskup Thietmar recorded the event. The absence of similar accounts in Polish chronicles suggests that local people were defending Businc not Bolesław the Brave’s soldiers.

The destruction of Businc is intriguing. The fact that all buildings including the local church were destroyed hints at its significance. Had it been a Latin church its destruction by the Czechs and Germans would be unlikely. It may well have been a Slavic Orthodox church. Such churches were actively suppressed by both the German and Czech Latin-rite churches.

Later. During the Napoleonic Wars. Russian soldiers brought Orthodox services to Görlitz. Even Tsar Alexander I himself briefly visited. A thanksgiving service was held in a house adapted for Orthodox worship. These services were short-lived ending when French troops occupied the city.

World War I brought another wave of Orthodox presence. A prisoner-of-war camp housed thousands of Russian soldiers. A church dedicated to St George the Victorious was established in a barrack. Following the Russian soldiers came Greek soldiers from the 4th Greek Army Corps. They were interned in the former Russian camp and treated well until 1918. A camp newspaper was published in Greek and German.

The Cerkiew pw swietych Rownych Apostolov Konstantyna i Heleny you see today is a continuation of this rich history. It was built in 2002. It serves a small but diverse congregation. Its existence is a tribute to resilience. It is a reminder of the enduring strength of faith in a border town. The story of the Cerkiew pw swietych Rownych Apostolov Konstantyna i Heleny shows the power of perseverance despite political upheaval. It demonstrates the constant presence of Orthodox Christianity in this area. A quiet story whispered through the centuries. A story of faith. A story of community. A story only just beginning.
