Imagine a beach so pristine it feels untouched. This is Tortuga Bay. It is a Galapagos Islands visitor site on Santa Cruz Island. This lovely beach earned its name from the black sea turtles that nest here.

Tortuga Bay’s history is intertwined with the Galapagos’ discovery in 1535. It first appeared on maps around 1570. Early cartographers named the islands “Insulae de los Galopegos” because of the giant tortoises.

The beach stretches out before us. It is a long expanse of white sand. The Galapagos wildlife surrounds us. Tortuga Bay offers many activities. We can relax and sunbathe. Swimming and snorkeling are also popular. However, swimming is forbidden directly from the main beach due to strong currents. A nearby cove provides sheltered waters for swimming. Kayaks are available for rent here.

Birdwatching is another favorite pastime. Pelicans and finches are common. Flamingos sometimes grace the salt lagoon behind the mangroves. Access to Tortuga Bay involves a dry landing. Some Galapagos cruises include Tortuga Bay in their itineraries. A walk from Puerto Ayora takes about an hour. The trail is approximately 1.5 miles long. It offers opportunities to spot warblers, finches, and mockingbirds. Lava lizards might also scuttle across the path. A water taxi from Puerto Ayora costs around $10 if you prefer not to walk.

The weather is warm between December and May. Rain showers may occur in the afternoons. Cooler temperatures prevail from June to November. The skies can be cloudy then. However, Tortuga Bay is lovely any time of year. The wildlife remains consistent year-round. The beach is open from 6 am to 6 pm. Visitors must sign in upon arrival.

Tortuga Bay is popular because of its beauty and diverse wildlife. Marine iguanas inhabit the area. Brightly colored Sally Lightfoot crabs scuttle along the rocks. Brown pelicans fish in the waves. Sea turtles nest on the beach. Flamingos occasionally visit the lagoon. Palo Santo trees, cacti, and salt bushes dot the landscape.

Snorkelers might see tropical fish. White tip reef sharks are common. Lucky visitors might even spot a tiger shark. Some cruises include a stop at Tortuga Bay. Confirm with your cruise line to ensure a visit. Water and snacks are available at the entrance. Remember to bring a towel, sunscreen, and a hat.

As we explore, remember that Tortuga Bay is a hidden gem. Many only venture to Playa Brava. Swimming is prohibited there. Playa Mansa, a protected bay, offers calm waters. It is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Mangroves line the bay. They attract small fish and marine life. Blue-footed boobies, white-tipped reef sharks, marine iguanas, and sea turtles feed here. The water is clear but can become stirred up near the shore. Visibility improves further out.

Kayaks can be rented at the protected bay. Paddling is easy in the calm waters. Wildlife is often visible from the kayaks. On the walk, we might see lizards and birds. Finches and mockingbirds are common. Interesting cacti and flowers also line the path. Some cacti are over a hundred years old.

Marine iguanas are very likely to be seen on the beach. Blue-footed boobies and pelicans are common sights. White-tipped reef sharks and sea turtles also frequent the area.

Tortuga Bay’s white sand beach and turquoise water captivate. Black volcanic rocks and mangroves add to the scenery. There is no better place for landscape photographers.

Our visit to Tortuga Bay ends here. Remember the unique beauty and diverse wildlife of this special place. Keep its image alive in your memory. Cherish what you have seen.
