Consider Houston’s rich musical history. In 1941 Bill Quinn started Quinn Recording now SugarHill Recording Studio. It is the oldest operating studio in the nation. Don Robey created Peacock Records in 1949. Goree Carter then released “Rock Awhile” one of the first rock and roll recordings in the U.S.
Big Mama Thornton recorded “Hound Dog” in 1952. Elvis Presley later covered it. Clifton Chenier invented zydeco. He released his first album in 1954. Zydeco was born in Houston’s 5th Ward.
The TSU Toronadoes created music for Archie Bell & The Drells’ “Tighten Up” in 1967. Moving Sidewalks released “99th Floor”. Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard of that band later formed ZZ Top.
ZZ Top released their third album Tres Hombres in 1973. It paved the way for their commercial success. Houston-born Melvin Sparks released “Texas Twister”. Kashmere Stage Band released “Out Of Gas But Still Burning”.
Houstonians Jennifer Holliday and Loretta Devine starred in Dreamgirls in 1981. Clay James released Houston’s first rap song “Thumpin”. Scarface joined the Geto Boys in 1989.
The Geto Boys sold 1 million records in 1991. H-Town released “Knockin’ Da Boots” in 1993. DJ Screw released “All Screwed Up Vol. 2” in 1995. He opened Screwed Up Records & Tapes in 1998.
Beyoncé released “Dangerously In Love” in 2003. She became the first woman to win 28 Grammys. Megan Thee Stallion won Grammys in 2021.
