Envision this. You are standing before a building that has witnessed history unfold the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid. This convention center has been a landmark in Madrid since its inauguration on June 1 1970.
The Palacio de Congresos is located on the Paseo de la Castellana. It stands at the intersection with Avenida del General Perón in the Cuatro Caminos neighborhood. Architect Pablo Pintado y Riba designed it. He won the design competition in 1964.
But there is more to it than just its location. This building has played a significant role in Spain’s modern history. It hosted the first OTI Festival in 1972. It was Madrid’s turn to shine.
Look at the facade. Notice the large ceramic mosaic. Joan Gardy Artigas created it. It is based on a sketch by Joan Miró. The mosaic was added to the facade in 1980. It adds an artistic touch to the building’s exterior. The vibrant colors capture Madrid’s artistic spirit.
In 1982 the Palacio de Congresos served as the press center for the FIFA World Cup. A temporary skyway connected the building to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Imagine the flurry of journalists and reporters bustling through here. The Palacio de Congresos was at the heart of the action.
The Goya Awards were held here from 1988. The Palacio de Congresos was the place where the Spanish film industry celebrated its finest achievements.
However in late 2012 the building closed. It needed security improvements. It has remained unused since then.
But there is hope on the horizon. Mayors Manuela Carmena and José Luis Martínez-Almeida have advocated for its reopening. There have even been plans to make it the headquarters of the UN’s World Tourism Organization.
As of now the Palacio de Congresos is undergoing refurbishment. It is expected to reopen in the first half of 2025. Building B will house the World Tourism Organization offices. The refurbished building will feature energy-efficient and sustainable measures.
