Highlands High School is a public school classified as 5A. The University Interscholastic League recognizes it as such. Highlands High School is one of twelve high schools. They all belong to the San Antonio Independent School District.
Back in 2022 to 2023 Highlands High School had 1651 students. The student to teacher ratio was about 15 to 1. The Texas Education Agency gave Highlands High School a B rating. That was for the 2021 to 2022 school year.
The Highlands Owls compete in many sports. Baseball basketball and cross country are among them. Football golf and soccer are also popular. Softball swimming diving tennis track and field are offered. Do not forget volleyball and wrestling too. Lacrosse is another option for students.
Sometimes things aren’t always smooth sailing. In 2016 there were fights at Highlands High School. This led to arrests and extra security. The school even had to change its schedule. A brawl in the gym made its way onto the internet. There were other fights on campus too.
One morning fights broke out before school. The last and biggest fight happened during lunchtime. Campus police arrested four students for assault. Three administrators and one police officer had minor injuries.
The school changed lunch periods. This was to avoid having too many students in the hallways. The principal sent a message to parents about a controlled dismissal. Extra officers were on campus for a while.
Despite the challenges Highlands High School stands strong. It offers a place for education and growth. Highlands High School also fosters community spirit.
Highlands High School also has its share of stars. The KSAT 12 sports team highlighted basketball players from Highlands. They appeared in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Basketball Game.
