Kubizuka Daimyojin. A name that echoes with a chilling tale. Right here, at this unassuming shrine, lies a secret both fascinating and gruesome. Kubizuka Daimyojin translates to “The Great Deity of the Head Mound”. This shrine holds the head of the notorious demon, Shuten-doji.

Let’s journey back to the Heian period. Picture Kyoto, plagued by a terrifying oni king, Shuten-doji. He terrorized the city from his lair on Mount Oe. The Emperor, desperate to end Shuten-doji’s reign of terror, dispatched the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu. Yorimitsu and his four retainers embarked on a perilous quest. Armed with a magical helmet and poisoned sake, they infiltrated Shuten-doji’s mountain fortress.

They offered the demon king the poisoned sake, which he greedily consumed. The sake weakened Shuten-doji, allowing Yorimitsu to strike the fatal blow. He severed the demon’s head. But even in death, the head remained potent and dangerous. As Yorimitsu carried the head back to Kyoto, it suddenly became incredibly heavy near Oinosaka Pass. They buried the head here, fearing to bring such evil into the capital. Thus, Kubizuka Daimyojin was born.

The shrine grounds are small but significant. Two mounds mark the resting place of the demon’s head and body. Sake is offered at the head mound, a grim reminder of Shuten-doji’s demise. A charred tree stands as a goshinboku, a sacred tree believed to be imbued with divine power. Some say the blackened portion was struck by lightning, further enhancing the area’s eerie atmosphere.

Many visitors report an unsettling atmosphere at Kubizuka Daimyojin. Some feel a sudden chill near the mounds, regardless of the season. Others claim to have captured strange images in photographs or even heard whispers in the wind. The surrounding area, with its abandoned buildings and untamed wilderness, only adds to the eerie atmosphere.

Kubizuka Daimyojin stands as a chilling reminder of Kyoto’s darker past. It’s a place where history and legend intertwine, a testament to the enduring power of folklore. So as you stand before this humble shrine, remember the tale of Shuten-doji, the demon king whose head rests beneath your feet.
