It’s the sixth mega mall in Gaborone. Imagine the cotton fields that once stood here. The name The Fields whispers of that simpler past. Yet the present is all gleaming glass and modern architecture.
Construction began in September 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges. Yet despite setbacks the mall opened its doors. It houses 70 stores. Many are new to Botswana. There’s even a Botswana’s first Dickeys Barbecue Pit. An American-style steakhouse. Then there’s the upscale G Spot restaurant. Another first is Doppio Zero. This breakfast spot also serves exceptional pizzas. It overlooks a water feature and a kiddies’ area. This thoughtful design enhances the shopping experience.
The architect Jasmina Telic aimed for natural light. Big windows illuminate the interior. This saves on electricity costs. It also connects the mall to its surroundings. The initial plan was a double-storey mall. However tenants preferred single-level stores. There’s still space to expand upwards. Future development is already being planned.
The Fields Shopping Center considered traffic flow. There’s a taxi drop-off point at the back. A passage leads directly into the mall. A pedestrian tunnel runs under Mandela Drive. This connects the mall to the nearby Gaborone Bus and Taxi Terminus. A pedestrian canopy is under construction. This will further enhance pedestrian access. A separate walkway also connects the mall parking to the CBD.
