A small bronze tablet. It rests near the Virginia Avenue entrance. This unassuming plaque holds the key to the story of Reinhard E Kaltenmeier Playground. This is more than just a playground. It’s a living memorial to a remarkable Staten Islander.

Reinhard E Kaltenmeier Playground sits nestled in Rosebank. It honors a man who rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in Staten Island’s political landscape. Reinhard Kaltenmeier wasn’t just a politician. He was an insurance salesman and the Sheriff of Richmond County. His life story is woven into the very fabric of this playground.

Born in 1876 his grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1843. Reinhard himself attended St Mary’s Parochial School. His family home doubled as a saloon and hotel. He even learned goldbeating in a shop behind the house. He married his childhood sweetheart Mary Doyle in 1896. Their life together wasn’t without tragedy. Mary died in 1909 leaving Reinhard to raise their four children alone. Further tragedy struck when two of his children died within eight months of each other.

Despite personal hardships Reinhard thrived in politics. He began his political career in 1902. He became captain of the second district’s Democratic Party. He served on the Board of Aldermen for over a decade. He was even elected Sheriff of Richmond County. He was known for his kindness. People remembered him as a father confessor always ready to offer help and advice.

This very land served as a park for 14 years before becoming a city park. The State of New York originally owned it. The city acquired the land in 1934. The Board of Aldermen renamed it Reinhard E Kaltenmeier Playground in 1936. The playground opened in 1938 after construction. It stands as a lasting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his community.

Come closer. Feel the cool smoothness of the bronze tablet. Imagine Reinhard’s life playing out in this space. See the children playing hear their laughter echoing through the trees. Reinhard E Kaltenmeier Playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a legacy. It’s a story of perseverance love and service to others. It’s a vital part of Staten Island’s rich history.
