Picture the elegant Casa Oprea Soare before you. This stunning building whispers tales of Bucharest’s rich past. It stands as a testament to the neo-Romanian style a style that blossomed at the start of the 20th century. The Casa Oprea Soare wasn’t just built; it was a statement. A statement of wealth and a celebration of national identity.

Built in 1914 by the talented architect Petre Antonescu the Casa Oprea Soare reflects a conscious effort to revive Romania’s architectural heritage. Antonescu’s designs drew inspiration from the Brancovenesc style. The result is a building that’s both modern and deeply rooted in Romanian history.

The house belonged to Dumitru Oprea Soare a wealthy merchant from an aristocratic family. While much about his life remains unknown we know he inherited his fortune from his father Dimitrie. The family’s wealth is documented in a 1902 inheritance agreement now held in the family archives. This agreement shows Dumitru inherited the family’s considerable wealth both through inheritance and through his father’s will.

The Casa Oprea Soare’s charm wasn’t lost on prominent figures. Vintilă Brătianu a significant figure in Romanian politics declared the building a prime example of national character in civil architecture. High praise indeed for a private residence.

Today the Casa Oprea Soare houses a restaurant. A branch of the Hanu’ Berarilor chain it maintains a connection to Bucharest’s vibrant culinary scene. It is a place where the past and present meet the echoes of a wealthy merchant’s past mingling with the clinking glasses of modern diners. This restaurant is a fitting tribute to this beautiful and historically significant building. Each visit is a journey through time a taste of Bucharest’s layered history within these carefully preserved walls. The building serves as a reminder that even amidst change some things remain elegant reminders of a bygone era.
