Who was this mysterious “Black Khan”? Let’s unravel the enigma surrounding Kale Khan ki Gumbad. This tomb, also known as Kale Khan ka Makbara, stands before us. It whispers tales of a bygone era. Kale Khan ki Gumbad translates to “Tomb of the Black Khan.” It houses the remains of Mubarak Khan Lohani. He was a nobleman during the reign of Bahlol Lodi. The tomb dates back to 1481 CE. Kale Khan ki Gumbad showcases a transition in Lodi architecture. It’s a shift from octagonal structures to the square designs favored later. The tomb’s exterior cleverly mimics a two-story building. Notice the alcoves framing the central arch. A larger recessed arch surrounds this. It creates a layered effect. The roof culminates in a beautiful dome. “Kanguras,” or battlement-like decorations, adorn the dome’s base. This dome is a remarkable 6.86 meters in diameter inside. From the outside, it measures 12.80 meters. This suggests a double-dome structure. Three sides of Kale Khan ki Gumbad have entrances. The western side features a mihrab. This niche indicates the direction of Mecca. Inside, two graves rest. The central one is unusually high. It’s believed to be Mubarak Khan’s, possibly alongside his wife. The nickname “Black Khan” remains a puzzle. Some believe it referred to Mubarak Khan’s complexion. However, no historical evidence supports this. Another theory suggests the tomb’s exterior was once blackened by pollution. This may have given rise to the name. Kale Khan ki Gumbad offers a glimpse into the Lodi dynasty’s architectural evolution. Despite its crumbling state, it holds a powerful presence. It continues to captivate visitors with its unique story.
