Its location is superb. It sits conveniently between Altona station the Elbe River and the vibrant Ottensen district.

The Altonaer Museum isn’t just a building. It’s a journey through time. It showcases the cultural and artistic history of Northern Germany. The museum’s collection is vast. It includes paintings and graphics. It also features crafts cultural history and maritime artifacts. Imagine seeing magnificent figureheads from ships. Picture incredible objects related to fishing whaling and seafaring. Even a historical apothecary awaits you.

But the museum’s appeal stretches beyond its impressive collection. Did you know that the Altonaer Museum boasts an interactive children’s area? This is the Kinderolymp. It makes the museum a perfect family destination. Special events add to the museum’s charm. Concerts dance literary events lectures and children’s festivals fill the Altonaer Museum’s calendar. It’s a place that truly comes alive.

The museum’s history is fascinating too. Originally housed at Palmaille 112 it was primarily botanical. Briefly closed due to low public interest in 1888 it was later taken over by the city. Growing Altona wanted a museum to showcase its achievements.

A new building was inaugurated on September 16 1901. It was built between the town hall and the new railway station. Altonaer teacher Otto Lehmann’s concept made the museum special. His focus was on Schleswig-Holstein regional studies. This set it apart from Hamburg’s museums with their more global focus. Lehmann directed the museum until 1931. He even became a founding member of the Altonaer Artists’ Association.

In 1998-99 the Altonaer Museum transitioned from state sponsorship to a foundation. It finally became part of the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation on January 1 2008.
