A volcanic eruption shaped Marchena Island. Its caldera is unusual. Almost completely filled with young lava flows some spilled over its sides. This is Marchena Island one of the Galapagos Islands.

Marchena Island is named after Fray Antonio Marchena a Spanish monk. He was among the first to visit this remote island. This uninhabited island is a hidden wildlife sanctuary. The Galapagos National Park protects its exceptional environment. That’s why it remains largely untouched.

Marchena Island boasts a unique ecosystem. The Marchena lava lizard is endemic here. Other wildlife thrives in the surrounding waters. You can spot cow-nosed rays sea turtles and hammerhead sharks. Schools of blue-striped snappers surgeonfishes moray eels and scorpion fishes are also common.

In 1991 Marchena experienced its last known volcanic eruption. This was the first recorded eruption in at least 100 years. The island’s volcanic activity significantly shaped its landscape. The highest point reaches 343 meters above sea level. The island covers 130 square kilometers.

Despite its remote location Marchena Island offers amazing diving and snorkeling opportunities. Punta Espejo and Punta Mejia are popular sites. Divers can encounter a diverse array of marine life. Hammerhead sharks Galapagos sharks dolphins and sea lions are common. Rays eels and a wide variety of fish are also present. Bats can sometimes be observed on the sand.

The conservation of Marchena Island is paramount. Introduced species have posed challenges. Feral goats were eradicated in a program lasting from 1970 to 1979. Little fire ants are another concern. Eradication efforts have been ongoing. The goal is to maintain the island’s pristine ecosystem.

Marchena Island a treasure of the Galapagos. Its volcanic origins untouched environment and abundant marine life make it a special place. While few people visit its remoteness makes it a unique destination for intrepid explorers. It’s a place where the forces of nature and wildlife meet in harmony.
