West End Chemical Co. acquired the Anniversary Mine and started production in 1921. But due to competition from California mines, the operation closed in 1928. Since then, there has been no borate production from the Muddy Mountains, or anywhere in Nevada.
Today, you can still find the foundations and tunnels. They are remnants of the mining operations. Imagine the hustle and bustle. Think about miners extracting colemanite. It is a hydrous calcium borate mineral found here.
The Las Vegas Gem Club currently holds rights to the area. Through the years, it has also become popular as a gem collecting area.
To reach the Anniversary Mine, you’ll travel along Northshore Road. This road turns into Anniversary Mine Road. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended. This is because the road can be sandy and rough.
Along the route, you’ll notice the landscape changing. It shifts from pavement to sandy washes. Then the road winds through a narrow canyon. It eventually climbs onto firmer ground.
The Anniversary Mine Road also provides access to other attractions. These include the Ore Car Mine and the Anniversary Narrows. The narrows are scenic slot canyons. They are similar to those in Utah’s San Rafael Swell.
