Was it always Hewlett Point? The answer is no. This area now known as Hewlett Point has a rich history tied to the Hewlett family. Let’s uncover how this place got its name and some of the key figures who shaped its identity.

Hewlett Point is named after the Hewlett family. The Hewlett family’s story begins with George Hewlett. He was born in England in 1634. George Hewlett emigrated to Long Island by way of Connecticut. He helped establish a community in what is now Hempstead.

The Hewlett name became prominent. So active in community life and prominent have been the various branches of the family that the town of Hewlett and one of Long Island’s beautiful bays have been named for them. This recognition reflects the family’s significant contributions and influence in the region.

Originally, this point of land was known as George Hewlett’s Point. George Hewlett’s grandson John owned a house and fifty acres of land at Rockaway. In 1739, John Hewlett sold the Rockaway property to his uncle Daniel.

The place was known as the “House at the Head of the Vly.” Daniel then transferred the property to his son Daniel. The Hewlett family’s presence remained strong.

Interestingly, for a time, the area was renamed Fenhurst in 1892. However, Augustus J. Hewlett, a descendant of George Hewlett, donated land to the Long Island Rail Road. There was a condition. The former name had to be reinstated. Thus, it became Hewlett again.

The Hewlett family’s influence extended beyond just the naming of geographical locations. Richard Hewlett, for instance, was a noted ranger and fighter. He even had a bounty on his head. Washington ordered that he be taken “dead or alive”.

Other Hewletts also served in various capacities. Captain Stephen served in the French and Indian Wars and the Revolution. Captain Thomas was the first to enter Fort Montgomery in 1777. These individuals played significant roles in shaping the region’s history.

Today, Hewlett Point stands as a testament to the Hewlett family’s legacy. Their story is woven into the very fabric of this community. It serves as a reminder of the individuals who helped shape Long Island. It connects this land to a family whose name is emblazoned in local history.
