In 1978, the growing congregation decided to formalize their commitment. They officially incorporated as Irish Channel Christian Fellowship Church on April 28, 1979. The church established its core beliefs and set ambitious goals. These included embracing diversity, ministering to the oppressed, and nurturing the local youth. Shining a light in the Irish Channel community has always been a central focus. Pastor Tilton answered the call to lead the flock in 1988 and continues his steadfast guidance to this day. The church’s influence extends far beyond its local community. They have supported missionaries and projects across the globe, from China and India to Haiti, Ghana, and numerous other nations. Irish Channel Christian Fellowship Church even sent Donna Rompf on a three-year mission to Haiti, providing both prayer and financial support. The devastating blow of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 scattered the congregation across the United States. Many lost everything. Yet, their 152-year-old sanctuary, though damaged, miraculously survived. For over two years, the fellowship hall became their temporary home. They even shared this space with two other displaced congregations, Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church and Rosedale Missionary Baptist Churches, showcasing the unifying power of faith in times of adversity. The restored sanctuary was rededicated on April 27, 2008, a symbol of resilience and the generosity of supporters nationwide. Irish Channel Christian Fellowship Church has consistently engaged in community outreach. From tutoring programs and Bible clubs to partnering with organizations like the New Orleans Mission and Habitat for Humanity, their service is tangible and ongoing. They are a vital part of the Greater New Orleans Federation of Churches and have hosted the Irish Channel Neighborhood Association meetings for over fifteen years.
