Tucked away in the bustling heart of Athens, the Church of St. Anargyroi stands as a testament to resilience and faith. St. Anargyroi, meaning “Holy Unmercenaries,” refers to the saints Cosmas and Damian, who offered their medical services without charge. The church, dedicated to these compassionate healers, has witnessed centuries of Athens’ history unfold. Originally built in the 11th century, St. Anargyroi was a rare architectural gem, a complex four-columned cross-in-square church with a two-story dome, known as “diplotholikos.” Imagine the original structure, devoid of a narthex, suggesting it wasn’t the main church of a monastery. The current church, however, reflects numerous renovations over time. The most significant alteration occurred in 1908, dramatically changing its original Byzantine character. Even amidst these changes, remnants of the past endure within St. Anargyroi. Sections of the original dome, the barrel vaults of the cross, and the altar arches still stand. These architectural fragments whisper stories of the church’s long history. St. Anargyroi also holds a unique connection to the Holy Sepulchre. Every year on Holy Saturday, the Holy Light arrives first at St. Anargyroi, a tradition emphasizing its spiritual significance. During the Greek Revolution, the church became a burial place for heroes like Panagiotis Ktenas, commander of the Acropolis. Literary figures like Alexandros Papadiamantis and Alexandros Moraitinis frequented St. Anargyroi. It is even said that Saint Nectarios of Aegina served as a deacon within these walls. The church’s rich history continues to resonate within its walls, offering a glimpse into the heart of Athens’ vibrant past.
