Has anyone ever told you about the time Johor Bahru was almost called Iskandar Puteri? Here we stand before the impressive Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru, better known as Johor Bahru City Council. This building represents the heart of a city with a surprisingly short but dynamic history. Johor Bahru, originally a quiet fishing village named Tanjung Puteri, was founded in 1855 by Temenggong Daing Ibrahim. He established his administrative center here, setting the stage for the city’s future growth. In 1858, the name changed briefly to Iskandar Puteri. Then, in 1866, during the opening ceremony of the Grand Palace, Istana Besar, Temenggong Abu Bakar, Ibrahim’s son, officially renamed the town Johor Bahru, meaning “New Johor”. Abu Bakar’s reign was a period of significant transformation. Landmarks like the Istana Besar, the Menteri Besar’s residence, and the stunning Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque were constructed. This era also witnessed the arrival of Chinese migrants, adding to the city’s growing cultural tapestry. The Johor Bahru Causeway, completed in 1923, linked Johor Bahru to Singapore, forever changing its destiny. This connection spurred economic growth and solidified Johor Bahru’s strategic importance. During World War II, the city played a pivotal role. The Japanese army occupied Johor Bahru in 1942, using Istana Bukit Serene as their base before invading Singapore. After the war, Johor Bahru became a center of Malay nationalism. In 1946, Dato Sir Onn bin Jaafar, a prominent local politician, founded the United Malay National Organisation here. This movement significantly impacted the political landscape, ultimately contributing to Malaya’s independence. Johor Bahru continued its expansion throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Industrial estates and new suburbs sprung up, transforming the city’s landscape. The culmination of this growth came on January 1, 1994, when Johor Bahru officially achieved city status. The Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru was built to commemorate this milestone. Today, Johor Bahru City Council oversees this vibrant metropolis. The city continues to evolve and flourish, a testament to its rich history and dynamic spirit.
