Craving a breath of fresh air outside Münster? Vorbergs Hügel awaits. This nature reserve offers a welcome escape. Vorbergs Hügel is more than just a green space. It is a testament to Münster’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Designated as a nature reserve in 1994, Vorbergs Hügel spans a generous 311 hectares. This protected area is a haven for local flora and fauna. The Vorbergshügel itself reaches almost 100 meters. The neighboring Mühlenberg is almost 98 meters high. These hills offer the highest points in the city. They rise dramatically above Münster’s landscape.

Vorbergs Hügel is part of the Altenberger Rücken. This ridge stretches northwest. The ridge is separated by the city boundary. The southeastern section of the ridge is called Nienberger Höhen. It is named after the nearby district of Nienberge.

Walking through Vorbergs Hügel, you will notice the dominance of deciduous forests. The hilltops are covered in trees. Hecken and heckenartige Vegetationskulturen are typical. Fields break up the hills at certain points. Vorbergs Hügel is a great example of the Münsterland park landscape.

Vorbergs Hügel is home to rare plant species. Sommerwurz and Bärlauch thrive here. Bärenschote, Wiesensilge and Hirse-Segge can be found too. Forty-seven plant species listed as endangered grow in this hill chain. This rich biodiversity led to its designation as a nature reserve in 1998.

The area is also home to rare animals and insects. Kleine Pechlibelle and Nördliche Kammmolch live here. These species can be found in small bodies of water. The NABU reports that 21 breeding bird species on the Red List live here. There are also three dragonfly species. Two amphibian and two grasshopper species are present as well.

In the 1990s, NABU championed Vorbergs Hügel’s protection. Concerns about the condition of the hedges led to action. In 2004, measures improved the area’s quality. This enhanced its appeal as a recreational area.

Today, Vorbergs Hügel is popular for recreation. Cyclists and joggers enjoy the area. Many paths wind through the hills. A route from the Radregion Münsterland runs through the nature reserve. It connects Kinderhaus and Nienberge.

Vorbergs Hügel offers a unique perspective. It highlights the importance of preserving natural spaces within urban environments. As you leave Vorbergs Hügel, remember that you have experienced a special place. Its beauty lies not only in its landscape but also in its ecological importance.
