Was it faith, or perhaps a touch of desperation, that led the first Catholic missionaries to a Leadwood tree in Botswana in July 1879? At this very spot, near the present-day Roman Catholic Church in Gaborone, Brother Joseph Hedley carved a cross into the tree, a symbol of the arrival of Catholicism. This tree, interestingly, already bore the mark of another explorer, David Livingstone. The Roman Catholic Church in Gaborone stands as a testament to the perseverance of these early missionaries. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaborone, under the motto “Deus Caritas Est” (God is Love), has a rich history interwoven with the nation’s own journey. Established in 1959 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Bechuanaland, it encompassed territories from modern-day Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. The diocese officially became the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaborone in 1966, coinciding with Botswana’s independence. The first bishop, Urban Charles Murphy, a Passionist missionary from Ireland, played a pivotal role, not only leading the diocese but also founding the local Sisters of Calvary congregation. The journey, however, was not without its challenges. The early Jesuits, arriving in 1879, faced resistance from Chief Khama in Shoshong, who feared religious conflict. They eventually moved north, establishing missions in Tati and Pandamatenga, but faced hardship and even death due to illness. Despite these setbacks, the Catholic faith took root. The Roman Catholic Church in Gaborone today represents the culmination of these early struggles and triumphs. It symbolizes a faith that persevered through adversity, ultimately flourishing and becoming an integral part of Botswana’s spiritual landscape.
