Hidden behind modern buildings on Bulevardul Națiunile Unite, the Biserica Sfinții Apostoli whispers tales of resilience. The Biserica Sfinții Apostoli stands as a testament to Bucharest’s rich and layered past. Originally a wooden structure in the latter half of the 16th century, it was known as the Tarnovo Monastery, reflecting its ties to a monastery in Bulgaria. Prince Matei Basarab, a prolific builder of churches, transformed the Biserica Sfinții Apostoli into a stone edifice in 1636. This marked a significant evolution for the church, solidifying its presence in the burgeoning city. The western wall bears a pisanie, a painted inscription, from 1715. It tells of Prince Matei Basarab’s construction and the additions by his successor, Ștefan Cantacuzino. Cantacuzino added a bell tower, portico, and an ornate stone door frame. The pisanie also features portraits of these ktetors, patrons of the church, and their wives. The church we see today at Biserica Sfinții Apostoli is largely the result of Cantacuzino’s renovations. He also rededicated the church to Saints Peter and Paul, giving it the name it holds to this day. The Biserica Sfinții Apostoli has endured its share of challenges. Earthquakes in 1802 and 1838 caused significant damage. The original three masonry domes were replaced with a single wooden one. The church also faced turbulent times during the 1655 seimeni revolt, when it was plundered by mercenaries. The Biserica Sfinții Apostoli possesses a unique blend of architectural styles. The cross-shaped structure, with its thick walls, speaks to its enduring strength. The single dome and bell tower, both rebuilt in masonry, rise above the nave and narthex. The portico, with its unequal arches resting on stone columns with floral capitals, offers a glimpse into the artistry of the past. Inside, the Biserica Sfinții Apostoli holds a wealth of history. The 1715 interior painting, though retouched during a 1936 restoration, offers a connection to the past. Carved stone graves, both inside and outside the church, tell silent stories of those who came before. Almost lost to the ambitious systematization plans of the 1980s, the Biserica Sfinții Apostoli was saved from demolition by the Romanian Revolution of 1989. Today, having undergone extensive restorations in the 21st century, it stands as a symbol of survival. The Biserica Sfinții Apostoli is more than just a church; it is a living narrative of Bucharest’s history, a quiet sanctuary amidst the bustling city.
