In 1984, a new chapter began in Uji’s educational landscape. The Uji City Hirono Junior High School, often called “Hirono-chuu,” opened its doors. Hirono-chuu emerged from the division of three existing schools: Uji Junior High, Minami-Uji Junior High, and Nishi-Uji Junior High. This division reflects Uji’s growth and the need to provide more focused educational opportunities. Uji City Hirono Junior High School is committed to comprehensive education. The Uji City Board of Education has implemented a unique initiative called the “Uji Hirono Children’s Garden.” This program connects kindergarten, elementary, and junior high education. It fosters a sense of community and allows for a more holistic approach to learning. Unlike some other schools in the area, Hirono-chuu does not participate in the school lunch program. Students bring their own lunches, creating a daily ritual of sharing and connection among classmates. Hirono-chuu offers a diverse array of extracurricular activities. Students can choose from sports like baseball, soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, and kendo. Those with artistic inclinations can join the brass band, art club, or science club. The school also provides home economics clubs. This vibrant array of options allows students to explore their interests and develop their talents. Uji City Hirono Junior High School primarily serves students from the surrounding areas. These include the entire districts of Uji City Ocubo Elementary School and Uji City Ohiraki Elementary School. The school’s location near the Uji City Botanical Garden offers students unique opportunities for learning and exploration outside the classroom.
