A silver mace. A symbol of authority. It rests in the Accademia Delle Scienze Mediche. Its gleam speaks of centuries.

Before you stands the Accademia Delle Scienze Mediche in Palermo. Its history is long and rich. Founded in 1621 as the Accademia di Anatomia it thrived under the patronage of the Palermo Senate. It was given a building behind the Palazzo Pretorio. That was next to the women’s quarters of the Martorana. A plaque near the current location at the Policlinico commemorates this. The Senate bestowed the status of a Public Law Entity. It also gave the Accademia a red cloth with the Senate’s coat of arms and the silver mace. Sadly the cloth is lost to time.

The Accademia operated independently of the University of Palermo. Established in 1805 the University didn’t initially have space for the Accademia. So it used the former Jesuit College for many years. This was until the Royal Academy of Studies opened in Palermo. Then the Accademia’s role shifted. It became focused on academic updating. Teaching and public health duties were no longer its main responsibilities.

In 1819 the city provided a new location. This was a building on Via San Cataldo near Piazza Bellini. Tragically this building was destroyed during the bombing of June 30 1943. Today the Accademia continues its crucial work. It is a significant landmark of Palermo. Its history reflects the evolution of medical science in the city. The silver mace is a powerful reminder of its enduring legacy. It is a testament to the lasting impact of the Accademia Delle Scienze Mediche. It is a symbol of Palermo’s commitment to medical advancement. The Accademia continues to play a vital role in the city’s intellectual life.
