“What a legacy” a former student whispers. Here stands Kyoto Municipal Yamashina Junior High School. Established in 1947 Yamashina Junior High School has a rich history. It began as a coeducational school. It was located at Kyoto Municipal Yamashina Elementary School.
In 1948 the first graduation ceremony was held. There were 41 graduates. Due to insufficient school buildings branch classrooms were set up. These were at Kanesaki and Otonowa Elementary Schools. In 1949 the school moved to its current location. New buildings were constructed. A school song was established. Student council was founded in 1950.
A lecture hall and gymnasium were completed in 1957. The first steel-reinforced school building was completed in 1958. The Kitakazan branch classroom opened in 1961. In 1963 Kyoto Municipal Hanayama Junior High School became independent.
The fourth school building was expanded in 1964. In 1965 the Otonowa branch classroom was completed. Otonowa branch became independent in 1967. It was renamed Kyoto Municipal Otonowa Junior High School. A swimming pool was completed in 1970.
In 1973 the north branch became independent. It became Kyoto Municipal Anshoji Junior High School. The number 5 school building was expanded. In 1974 the east side of the number 5 school building was expanded.
Due to an increase in students temporary classrooms were set up in 1975. In 1976 the south branch was completed. The south branch opened. Ten temporary classrooms were removed from the main school.
In 1977 the south branch became Kyoto Municipal Kinoshu Junior High School. The main school had 704 students. In 1980 the wooden buildings were removed. The main building was expanded. A commemorative garden was created.
A 35th-anniversary commemorative magazine was published in 1982. In 1983 the school was designated a research promotion school. The student council held its first leadership training camp. Eight classrooms were added to the school building.
Eight classrooms were added in 1984. The student body adopted an anti-bullying slogan. Students gifted handmade paper flowers to local seniors. In 1986 the 40th-anniversary ceremony was held. A commemorative magazine was published.
In 1987 the standard uniform was changed. The Yamashina Junior High School PTA was renamed. The student council received an award for educational contribution. In 1989 buildings 3 and 4 were renovated.
In 1990 a computer room was completed. The school was designated for volunteer activities. In 1994 the school’s Muku tree was selected. It was one of Kyoto’s 100 notable trees. A new club room was completed in 1995. The gymnasium was completed. A new pool was completed in 1997.
The grounds were renovated in 1998. In 2001 school lunches began. In 2006 a school LAN was introduced. In 2017 the 70th-anniversary ceremony was held. Air conditioners were installed in some rooms. In 2018 wireless LAN was installed.
Kyoto Municipal Yamashina Junior High School stands as a testament to education. It fosters growth within the community.
