Slipping through the trees, a shy roe deer glances back, a fleeting image against the dense foliage of the Spandauer Forst. This vast expanse of green, stretching across 1347 hectares, whispers tales of Berlin’s past. Spandauer Forst, once known as the “Stadtheide,” served the citizens of Spandau for centuries. They hunted its grounds, gathered firewood, and cultivated its edges. This connection to the land shaped the forest and its people. Originally part of the independent city of Spandau, Spandauer Forst became part of Berlin’s northwestern edge. Today, it remains a testament to the resilience of nature. The 18th century saw attempts to tame the forest, with drainage measures implemented to create more usable land. The Nieder Neuendorfer Kanal, carved through the forest in the 1730s, altered the landscape forever. Further disruption came with the opening of the Spandauer waterworks in the late 19th century. The waterworks drew heavily on the forest’s groundwater. This caused the water table to drop dramatically, impacting the delicate ecosystem. Moore dried up and several smaller bodies of water vanished. The impact on the flora and fauna was devastating. Thankfully, the 1980s brought a renewed focus on conservation. An extensive irrigation system, drawing water from the Havel River, replenishes the forest’s lifeblood. Artificial lakes and carefully constructed ditches now weave through Spandauer Forst, sustaining its diverse inhabitants. Designated nature reserves, like the Teufelsbruch and the Großer and Kleiner Rohrpfuhl, protect unique moorland habitats. The Spandauer Forst teems with life. The endangered stag beetle clings to ancient trees, while pond frogs, toads, and grass snakes thrive in the restored wetlands. The air fills with the songs of rare birds, from the tiny kingfisher to the majestic crane. Foxes, badgers, and wild boars roam the undergrowth, reclaiming their ancient domain. Even otters and beavers occasionally venture in from the Havel, drawn by the promise of abundant waterways. Spandauer Forst offers a refuge, a reminder of the wild heart of Berlin.
