Lost in time yet standing strong is the Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom. This is not just a temple but a story etched in brick and stone. Today we explore this ancient site. We will uncover its secrets and appreciate its enduring beauty.

Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom is also known as Choub Poul Temple. It is located in Svay Chrom Village. The temple is surrounded by a moat that is unusually accessed from the west. This unique feature sets it apart from many other ancient temples.

The remains of a rectangular brick temple stand here. They are flanked by a pagoda and a monastery. The temple’s architecture is a little unusual. It lacks the false doors and bold pilasters common in most brick temples.

The entrance faces east. A sandstone doorframe marks the opening. Above it, you can see a pediment formed in brick. Embossed brickwork adorns each side of the door. It is possible that this brickwork once held artwork. Maybe the artwork was never completed. Embossed pilasters stand at each corner. Remnants of elaborate brickwork decorate the base.

Inside Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom, an old sema stone sits. You can see remnants of a pedestal. This pedestal likely featured a spout. The spout transferred water to an external spot. You can still see this spot in the center of the north wall.

An inscription was recorded from the doorframe. It is registered under K. 789. The inscription features two lines of Sanskrit. These lines record a donation to Hari. The Bhagavata family of Thnal Vnah made the donation. Georges Coedes translated the inscription. He noted it as pre-Angkorian.

The charming old pagoda fronts the temple on its east side. A monastery sits a little further to the west. These additions create a serene and spiritual atmosphere. They complement the ancient temple.

Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom carries a reference ID HA12025. It is also known as Baray Pagoda. Its MoCFA ID is 742. The temple is tagged with pa, rc, sema, T4, Temples and Wat. These tags reflect its historical and religious significance.

Imagine the artisans carefully crafting each brick. Picture the priests chanting prayers. Consider the devotees offering donations. Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom was a place of worship and community.

Wat Baray Preah Chiv Thom stands as a testament to Cambodia’s rich history. Its unique architecture, ancient inscriptions and spiritual ambiance make it a compelling site. As you leave, reflect on the stories held within these ancient walls.
