Did the Cau Dua Bridge always look so imposing? Here we stand before Cau Dua Bridge, a concrete giant spanning the Saigon River. This bridge isn’t just a way across; it’s a symbol of resilience and a key player in Saigon’s story. Originally called Newport Bridge, Cau Dua Bridge opened in 1961. It became the main artery connecting District 1 with District 2’s burgeoning Thu Thiem New Urban Area. Imagine the flow of life across this bridge. Four lanes for cars, two for motorcycles and bicycles, all pulsing with the city’s energy. Cau Dua Bridge wasn’t just a convenience; it was a lifeline. It was the sole link between these two vital districts until 2008. Then the Thu Thiem Bridge opened, followed by the Saigon River Tunnel in 2011. But even then, Cau Dua Bridge held its ground. Think back to the Tet Offensive in 1968. This bridge, a vital gateway from northern and central Vietnam, became a focal point of conflict. Again, in 1975, during the Fall of Saigon, Cau Dua Bridge played a critical role. In May 1968, during the “mini-Tet” Offensive, the Viet Cong launched an attack on the bridge and the nearby Newport dock. They were repelled by the ARVN forces. Just days later, a Viet Cong recoilless rifle scored a direct hit. A massive chunk of the bridge plunged into the river below. Despite the damage, the bridge remained operational. Engineers worked tirelessly, repairing the structure within weeks. The Cau Dua Bridge stood firm. The bridge faced another challenge in April 1975. As the PAVN advanced on Saigon, the Viet Cong attempted to seize the bridge. Again, they were pushed back by the ARVN. Even on April 30th, the day of Saigon’s fall, fighting raged near the bridge. ARVN and PAVN tanks exchanged fire until the very moment of surrender. Though rigged with explosives, the Cau Dua Bridge survived, a silent witness to history. Today, a new companion stands beside the Cau Dua Bridge. The Saigon 2 Bridge, opened in 2013, now shares the burden of traffic. But the original Cau Dua Bridge remains. It stands as a testament to its enduring strength and a crucial piece of Ho Chi Minh City’s past and present.
