Can you imagine a village where most people could read and write, even back in the 16th century? That’s Gondecourt for you, a place with a surprisingly rich history. Gondecourt is nestled in northern France in the Nord department. This charming commune has seen its share of history, from its humble beginnings to its modern-day charm. Gondecourt’s story begins around the 7th century. The first written record of the name appears in 1146, in a charter of the Marchiennes Abbey. Over the next few centuries, Gondecourt is mentioned in various documents, often related to land ownership and religious institutions. A pivotal moment for Gondecourt comes in 1191. Pope Clement III took the Seclin Collegiate Church under his protection, including Gondecourt’s altar and its associated lands. In 1308, one of the earliest texts written in the local language instead of Latin appears. This document details a land transaction in Gondecourt, providing a glimpse into the everyday lives of its inhabitants. Gondecourt has unique customs. In the late 16th century, newly married couples who had lived in the village for ten years received a portion of the marsh. This tradition continued until the late 1970s. Gondecourt wasn’t immune to the turmoil of the times. In 1566, the villagers joined forces with Seclin to defend themselves against the Beggars’ Revolt. This uprising, originating in Brussels, was a reaction against Spanish rule in the Netherlands. The village also boasts a fascinating feudal history. Gondecourt was the seat of a main seigneury and several other fiefdoms. The land and seigneury of Avelin, including Gondecourt’s town hall, were elevated to a barony in 1664. This honor was bestowed upon Michel de Hangouart for his family’s loyal service. Through the centuries, the ownership of Gondecourt passed through different hands. Families like de la Broye and de Broide held the title of Lord of Gondecourt. Their stories are interwoven with the history of the village. You can still find traces of their presence in Gondecourt today. A local farm, once the property of a seigneurial family, still bears the name “Château”. An inscription, dating back to 1590, can be found on a beam in the cellar of this farm. Education has a long history in Gondecourt. Italian historian Francesco Guicciardini highlighted Gondecourt as a place where public instruction was well-established. The village later became home to a boarding school founded by Edmond Couvreur. This institution evolved over time, becoming a girls’ primary school, then a college, and finally, the Lycée Marguerite de Flandre. In 1990, the Collège Georges-Rémi, named after the creator of Tintin, opened its doors. Gondecourt’s present-day population stands at over 4,000. The village offers a blend of history and modernity. While the days of marsh distribution and feudal lords are long gone, the spirit of Gondecourt lives on.
