In 1872 Amanda Dignowity bought two acres for her family. Over time parts were sold. The city of San Antonio took over in 1947. The Dignowity family plot remains in the southeast corner. Amanda Dignowity herself was quite the pioneer woman. Wife of Dr Anthony M Dignowity she bore eight children. One child founded Del Rio Texas. They owned a ranch near Brackettville. The Texas and New Orleans Railroad even named a supply point Amanda after her. The town however vanished in 1909.

Dr Anthony M Dignowity was a fascinating figure. Born in Bohemia he arrived in New York in 1832. He volunteered in the Mexican War. He settled in San Antonio and practiced medicine. He was also a successful businessman. His home Harmony House overlooked the city. His strong abolitionist and Unionist views made him controversial. He even wrote an autobiography Bohemia under Austrian Despotism. His life was quite eventful.

Dignowity Cemetery reflects these eventful lives. It’s a place where history and personal stories intertwine. It’s a quiet corner but holds layers of San Antonio’s rich history.
