From a simple idea to a towering tribute, Henry Hudson Park stands as a testament to perseverance and community spirit. Henry Hudson Park isn’t just a patch of green in Spuyten Duyvil. It’s a monument to a man who shaped the very landscape we see today. The park, nestled at the crossroads of Kappock Street and Independence Avenue, offers a tranquil escape with its Half Moon overlook perched above Spuyten Duyvil Creek. This overlook is a nod to Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, which carried him on his explorations. The park’s centerpiece is a magnificent monument dedicated to Henry Hudson, the explorer who gave his name to the mighty river, the parkway, and the bridge. Originally conceived in 1906 to mark the 300th anniversary of Hudson’s arrival in New York Bay, the project faced numerous setbacks. The 100-foot Doric column, designed by Walter Cook, was erected in 1912. However, funds dried up soon after, leaving the monument incomplete. It took the vision of Robert Moses in the late 1930s to revive the project. By 1938, the area surrounding the column was officially designated Henry Hudson Park. Atop the column stands a striking 16-foot bronze statue of Henry Hudson, sculpted by Karl Bitter and Karl Gruppe. The park also holds a heartwarming story of community dedication. Paul Cymerman, a local activist, spearheaded major renovations in 1989 and 1995. His tireless efforts transformed Henry Hudson Park into the beloved space it is today. In recognition of his contributions, a playground within the park was renamed Paul’s Park in 2003, a rare honor for a living person. Even after his passing in 2004, the community continues to uphold his legacy, ensuring the park remains a safe and welcoming haven for all. Henry Hudson Park embodies more than just history; it’s a living tribute to exploration, community, and the enduring power of human spirit.
