Founded in 1909 the Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem stands proudly before you. Originally a private school for Prussian nobility it embodies a rich history. This prestigious institution wasn’t just a school. It was a microcosm of society reflecting its changing times.

The Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem’s location in Dahlem was once considered far outside the city. This contributed to its unique character. The buildings themselves with their blend of reform architecture and neo-baroque and neo-classical elements are a testament to this early era. Designed by the Hennings brothers the school’s architecture is as noteworthy as its academic legacy.

The school’s history isn’t without its complexities. The Weimar Republic and Nazi era saw the school largely remain neutral. This was due to its clientele’s social standing. However its students’ and faculty’s affiliations with Deutschnational movements reveal a less neutral reality. Some students joined Freikorps. Those killed in action are even listed on the school’s memorial. This list includes not only casualties from World War I but also from the post-war violence of 1919 and 1921. Bomb damage during World War II was repaired. The original state was restored with two new buildings added. This blend of old and new truly defines this school’s character.

After the war the associated boarding school closed. The Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem became a public school. The school continues to evolve. Today it’s a school of special pedagogical focus. It maintains a humanistic and reform pedagogical tradition. There is a strong emphasis on aesthetics and music. Science and mathematics are also central. The focus remains on holistic personality development. The school also embraces self-motivated and social learning.

The Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem is more than just classrooms and hallways. It’s a place of artistic expression. The school boasts multiple orchestras ensembles and choirs. The United Big Band even won the 2018 Bundesbegegnung Jugend jazzt. They are not only musically talented but also very active in international exchange programs. The school has an impressive array of notable alumni including scientists artists and politicians. This underlines the school’s lasting influence and commitment to educating young minds. The Arndt-Gymnasium Dahlem is more than just an educational institution. It’s a living testament to the power of education and enduring legacy.
